Walking in Austria is a must for any keen walker once you try it you will come back again and again, great weather, stunning views, friendly people and clean air, what more could you ask for!

There are endless walks straight from the door and a huge variety of grades to choose from. In the summer there are a great number of mountain huts (restaurants) to walk to for a relaxing lunch or a strenuous hike. Many of the locals drive part way up the mountain to start their walk and then it is just a 30 min. stroll to a beautiful mountain restaurant where you can drink a beer and listen to traditional Austrian music before returning back down.

Alternatively you can take one of the many ski lifts open in the summer up or down to access the even higher peaks without having to be a mountain goat.

Another benefit of this area is the beautiful mountain villages you can visit. One of the prettiest is Maria Alm just five minutes down the road with it’s amazing church boasting the highest spare in all of Salzburger Land. This is a sleepy village with many street cafes and bars to relaxing and take the world in. Or nearby Saalfelden a larger town with many good shops and restaurants. Plus a day trip to Salzburg is always a must.

Guided walks are available upon request allowing us to lead the way whilst you appreciate the beautiful views, flora and fauna.

In Austria walking is a family affair with well marked footpaths and easygoing underfoot this is a stark contract to Mountaineering that is also in abundance with high rocky peaks and exposed ridges (See our Climbing section for more details)

The Hochkoenig area is one of the most beautiful parts of Austria for walking and far exceeds the likes of the Tirol for shear natural beauty, great weather, no crowds and friendly people. This is where the Austrians go to avoid the tourists in the summer and take a more relaxing holiday. You wont find this area in any of the guide books, don’t be surprised it’s our secret!
